BS Flanges Solutions

BS flanges refer to flanges that conform to the British Standard BS 10:1962 specification. These flanges are commonly used in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe, and they are designed to be used with pipes that conform to the British Standard BS 4504:1967 specification. The BS 10 specification covers flanges in a range of sizes and pressure ratings, from small (size 3) flanges with a pressure rating of 150 pounds per square inch (psi) to large (size 48) flanges with a pressure rating of 2500 psi. Some common types of BS flanges include welding neck flanges, slip-on flanges, and blind flanges. Welding neck flanges are designed to be welded to the neck of a pipe, while slip-on flanges are designed to be slipped over the end of a pipe and then welded in place. Blind flanges are used to seal off the end of a pipe, and they do not have a bore (hole) in the center. If you need to connect pipes using BS flanges, it is important to ensure that the flanges you use are compatible with the pipes and meet the required pressure rating. You should also carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use to ensure that the flanges are installed properly and provide a reliable, leak-free seal.

Advantages and disadvantage of British Standard Flanges

Some of the benefits of British Standard flanges include compatibility with other flanges and fittings that meet BS standards and the ability to handle high pressure and high temperature applications. They are also known for their durability and reliability, and are widely available in a variety of sizes and materials. A disadvantage of British Standard flanges is that they may not be compatible with pipe flanges and fittings from other countries that use different size and pressure class standards. This can make it difficult to connect British Standard flanges to piping or other components manufactured outside of the UK. In addition, some users may find that the variety of sizes and materials available may make it difficult to select the right flange for a particular application.

What are the different types of British Standard Flanges?

There are several different types of BS Flanges, including Weld Neck Flanges, Slip-On Flanges, Blind Flanges, Threaded Flanges, and Socket Weld Flanges. Each type of flange is designed for a specific application and has unique characteristics that make it suitable for different types of piping systems.

  • Weld Neck Flanges are designed for high-pressure applications and are used to connect pipes or other piping components. They have a long, tapered neck that is welded to the pipe or fitting, providing added strength and stability.
  • Slip-On Flanges are similar to Weld Neck Flanges, but they do not have a tapered neck. Instead, they have a short, flat collar that is welded to the pipe or fitting. These flanges are suitable for low- to medium-pressure applications.
  • Blind Flanges are used to close off the end of a pipe or fitting. They have a solid, circular body with no bore or opening, and are often used in applications where the flow of fluid must be stopped or redirected.
  • Threaded Flanges are designed for use with pipes or fittings that have threads. They have a threaded bore that allows them to be attached to the pipe or fitting using a threaded connection.
  • Socket Weld Flanges are similar to Threaded Flanges, but they have a socket-shaped bore that allows them to be attached to the pipe or fitting using a socket-weld connection. These flanges are suitable for high-pressure applications.

Material of British Standard Flanges

British Standard flanges are usually made of forged carbon steel or stainless steel. These materials are chosen for their strength and durability, as well as their corrosion resistance. Depending on the specific application, other materials, such as alloy steel, may also be used. It is important to select the right material for a specific application to ensure that the flange can withstand the required pressure and temperature conditions.

Size of BS Flanges

There are different types of BS flanges, each with its own size range. The size of the BS flange depends on the size of the pipe or fitting used. For example, a BS4504 flange used with 1″ pipe has a diameter of approximately 1.5″. To determine the exact size of a BS flange, you need to know the type of flange and the size of the pipe or fitting with which it is to be used. The size of a BS flange is usually specified by its nominal size, which is the diameter of the pipe designed to be used with the flange. the nominal size of a BS flange is usually expressed in inches, but can also be expressed in millimeters.

Dimensions of British Standard Flanges

The dimensions of these flanges are usually specified based on BS flange diameter, bolt circle diameter, bolt hole size and flange thickness. The specific dimensions of a particular British Standard flange depend on the size and pressure rating of the flange.

Dimensions of BS 4504 Flange

BS4504 flanges, are flanges that conform to the British Standard BS4504: Section 3.1: 1989, which outlines the specifications for circular flanges for pipes, valves, and fittings. The dimensions of British Standard Flanges are determined by the size of the pipe or fitting to which the flange will be attached, as well as the pressure rating of the flange.

Manufacturing process of BS Flanges

BS flanges can be produced by forging, casting, cutting or rolling. We mainly produce flanges by forging, cutting and rolling processes.

Manufacturing process of BS forged flange

The forging process usually includes the following processes, i.e. selection of high quality billets, heating, forming and cooling.

20221213060528 74749 - British Standard Flanges

  • Raw material inspection – The key raw material used to produce flanges is billet or hot rolled bar stock. All raw materials purchased are supplied with test reports in accordance with British Standards with full traceability. This is the first mandatory step in the flange production process to ensure good quality. The raw materials are retested in-house to ensure chemical composition, mechanical properties and metallographic analysis.
  • Cutting of raw materials – Correct and strict control of cutting sizes and proportions ensures full cost control.
  • Heating – This is a very important step for the quality of the flanges. It is necessary to keep detailed records of heating temperatures to avoid overheating. Overheating can damage the structure of the metal and the mechanical properties of the raw material.
  • Forging – The forging process is divided into free forging and die forging. The forging time and strength of flanges vary for different pressure classes.
  • Heat treatment-The purpose of heat treatment is to eliminate the stress inside the flange and make the density more uniform. Careful recording of heat treatment temperature and cooling time is the key.
  • Inspection of forging blanks – After the heat treatment process, select batch samples are tested again for chemical composition and mechanical properties to ensure that all items pass.
  • Machining of forging blanks – During machining, inspection is performed along with machining to ensure that each part of the flange is qualified. Machining is performed on CNC and/or lathes.
  • Finished Product Inspection – The finished product will be inspected 100% prior to delivery to ensure that the goods meet ASME, EN or customer standards.
  • Documented Documentation – The entire production process and quality checks at different levels are documented according to ISO compliant standard operating procedures. This is the guarantee of good quality.
  • Test certificates: As we are an ISO and PED certified manufacturer, we can issue test certificates for all goods upon delivery and inspection in accordance with British Standards.
  • Packaging: All forgings and flanges are packed in wooden boxes or crates or pallets to ensure safe movement of the goods.

Production process of BS casting flange

The production process of a BS casting flange typically involves several steps, including the creation of a mold or pattern, the casting of the flange using molten metal, and various finishing and quality control steps. To begin the process, a mold or pattern is created using a material such as wood or metal. This mold or pattern will be used to create the shape of the flange, and will typically be made to precise specifications to ensure that the final product meets the desired dimensions and specifications. Once the mold or pattern is ready, the casting process can begin. This typically involves melting the metal that will be used to create the flange, such as iron or steel, and pouring the molten metal into the mold or pattern. The metal is then allowed to cool and solidify, taking on the shape of the mold or pattern. After the casting process is complete, the flange will typically undergo various finishing and quality control steps. This may include machining or grinding to achieve the desired dimensions and surface finish, as well as testing to ensure that the flange meets the required specifications and standards. Overall, the production process for a BS casting flange is a highly precise and technical process that requires a thorough understanding of metallurgy, casting techniques, and quality control processes.

Manufacturing process of BS plate cutting flange

The process here is relatively simple, and the key raw material is hot rolled plate. The process is mainly used to produce lower thickness sliding plate flanges and blind flanges. All plates purchased are accompanied by a test certificate to British Standards. The circles are cut from the plates. No heat treatment is involved in the flange manufacturing process. Drilling and machining is carried out on the circles to obtain the required dimensions. The goods are visually inspected and marked in accordance with the relevant standards.

Marking of BS Flanges

BS flanges are usually marked with a code indicating the flange size and pressure rating. The code is usually printed on the flange or on a label printed on the flange. The code may also include other information such as the type of flange (e.g., weld neck, slip-on, etc.), the material used to make the flange, and the name or logo of the manufacturer. The exact format of the code may vary depending on the standard organization that created it, but it is usually a combination of letters and numbers. For example, a BS flange with a size of 10 inches and a pressure rating of 150 pounds per square inch (PSI) might be marked as “BS10 150#” or something similar.

Packing of BS Flanges

In terms of packing, it is important to properly pack the BS flanges to protect them during shipping and handling. This can typically be done using protective materials such as bubble wrap, foam sheets, or packaging peanuts to cushion the flanges and prevent them from being damaged. It is also important to properly label the package to indicate the contents and to ensure that it is handled with care during transport.

Inspection and measurement of BS Flanges

The inspection and measurement of these flanges is usually carried out in accordance with the relevant BS standards. This usually involves measuring the dimensions of the flange, such as the diameter and thickness of the flange and the size and shape of the bolt holes. In addition, the surface finish and overall condition of the flange should be checked for any defects or irregularities. BS flanges are typically inspected and measured using a variety of tools and methods to ensure they meet the necessary codes and standards. This can include measuring the dimensions of the flange using calipers and micrometers, as well as using visual inspection techniques to check for any defects or inconsistencies in the material. Other methods, such as x-ray or ultrasonic inspection, can also be used to check for internal defects that cannot be detected by visual inspection alone. The specific inspection and measurement methods used depend on the type and size of the flange and the specific requirements of the application.
