What are JIS Flanges?

JIS flanges are pipe flanges manufactured and used in Japan. They are designed to meet Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) and are commonly used in Japan and other parts of Asia. JIS flanges are available in a variety of pressure ratings, from low to high pressure, and are made from a wide range of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel and cast iron. JIS flanges are similar to other types of pipe flanges, such as ANSI flanges, in that they are used to connect pipes, valves and other piping components. However, JIS flanges have some unique features that make them distinctive. For example, they are typically made of flat surfaces rather than convex surfaces as many other flanges are. They also use a different numbering system for their size and pressure class designations. If you are working on a project that requires JIS flanges, be sure to use the right type and size for your application. Using the wrong flange can lead to problems such as leaks or system failure. It is also important to ensure that flanges are properly installed in accordance with all relevant standards and guidelines.

Advantages and disadvantage of JIS Flanges

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) flanges are used in piping systems in Japan and other parts of Asia. Some of the advantages of JIS flanges include.

  • They are precisely dimensioned to ensure a tight seal when used with JIS flange gaskets.
  • They are available in a wide range of sizes and pressure ratings for a variety of applications.
  • They are made of high quality materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum, which makes them durable and corrosion resistant.
  • They are easy to install and maintain.

Some disadvantages of JIS flanges include.

  • They may not be compatible with flanges from other standards, such as ANSI (American National Standards Institute) or DIN (German Standards Institute).
  • They may not be widely available in all countries, which may result in longer lead times and higher procurement costs.
  • The use of JIS flanges may require special tools and equipment, which may increase the overall cost of installation and maintenance.
  • They may not be suitable for high temperature or high pressure applications.

What are the different types of JIS flanges?

JIS flanges are flanges that conform to the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) for flanges and pipe fittings. JIS flanges are used in Japan and other countries in Asia. There are several types of JIS flanges, including the following: JIS B2220-1984 Flanges (5K, 10K, 16K, 20K, 30K, 40K) – These flanges are rated based on their pressure capacity and are available in sizes ranging from 15mm to 2000mm in diameter. JIS B2220 flanges are a type of flange commonly used in Japan and other parts of Asia. There are several types of JIS B2220 flanges, including:

  • Slip on plate flange: This type of flange is designed to be slipped over the end of a pipe and then welded in place.
  • Slip on hubbed flange: This type of flange is similar to a slip on plate flange, but it has a hub that extends from the center of the flange. This hub is used to connect the flange to the pipe.
  • Socket welding flange: This type of flange is designed to be used with a socket weld connection. It has a small bore that allows the pipe to be inserted into the flange and then welded in place.
  • Weld neck flange: This type of flange has a neck that is welded to the pipe. It is used in high pressure and high temperature applications.
  • Lap joint flange: This type of flange is used in conjunction with a lap joint stub end. It has a curved surface that allows it to be slipped over the end of the stub end and then bolted in place.
  • Threaded flange: This type of flange has threads on the inside bore, allowing it to be connected to a pipe using threads.
  • Integral flange: This type of flange is made from a single piece of pipe, with the flange machined directly onto the end of the pipe.
  • Blind flange: This type of flange is used to seal off the end of a pipe. It has no bore and is not designed to be connected to another pipe or fitting.

Material of JIS Flanges

The materials used for JIS flanges depend on the type of flange and the pressure class. Common materials used for JIS flanges include carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and aluminum. JIS B2220 flanges are available in pressure ratings of 5K, 10K and 16K and are made of carbon steel or stainless steel. Depending on the specific application and the required pressure and temperature ratings, it is important to select the right material for the JIS flange. Flanges made of the wrong material may not be strong enough to withstand the pressure and may fail, which could result in serious injury or damage.

Size of JIS Flanges

JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) flanges are available in a range of sizes, with the most common sizes being 15 kgf/cm^2 (1.5 MPa), 30 kgf/cm^2 (3 MPa), and 40 kgf/cm^2 (4 MPa). The size of a JIS flange is typically specified by the nominal diameter of the pipe it is used with, in millimeters. The nominal diameter is the inside diameter of the pipe, which is not the same as the outside diameter. JIS flanges are also designated by their pressure rating and their flange type, such as JIS 10K or JIS 20K. Do you have any more questions about JIS flanges?

Dimensions of JIS Flanges

In Japan, flanges are commonly classified by pressure rating. The classification system for flanges in Japan is the JIS B2220 standard, which includes seven pressure ratings: 2K, 5K, 10K, 16K, 20K, 30K, 40K, and 63K. The pressure rating of a flange is an indication of the maximum pressure that the flange can withstand at a given temperature. Here are the dimensions for each pressure rating:

  • Flange diameter: 15 mm to 600 mm
  • Flange thickness: 2 mm to 36 mm
  • Bolt diameter: 8 mm to 38 mm

Manufacturing process of JIS Flanges

JIS flanges are known for their high quality standards and durability. But how are JIS flanges manufactured? Here, we will take a look at the manufacturing process of JIS flanges. First, let’s start with the raw materials used to manufacture JIS flanges. These flanges are usually made from carbon steel, stainless steel or alloy steel. The raw material is cut to the desired size and shape using a cutting machine. Next, the raw material is heated to a high temperature in a furnace. This is done to make the material more pliable and easier to use. Once the material has reached the desired temperature, it is placed in a forging machine. The forging process involves forming the material into the desired shape using a series of dies. This is done under high pressure to ensure the flange has the required strength and durability. After the forging process, the flanges are allowed to cool before the machining process is carried out. During this process, the flanges are cut and shaped to the exact dimensions specified in the JIS standard. This is done using various machines, such as lathes and milling machines. Once the machining process is complete, the flanges are ready for quality testing. This includes checking for defects, measuring to ensure the flange meets the required dimensions, and pressure testing to ensure it can withstand the required pressure. Finally, the flanges are cleaned, painted or coated to protect them from corrosion. The flanges are then ready for packaging and shipping to the customer. In summary, the manufacturing process for JIS flanges involves several steps, including raw material selection, forging, machining, and quality testing. These steps ensure that the final product meets the high quality standards required by JIS specifications.

Manufacturing process of JIS forged flange

The forging process usually includes the following processes, i.e. selection of high quality billets, heating, forming and cooling.

20221213060528 74749 - JIS Flanges

  • Raw material inspection – The key raw material used to produce flanges is billet or hot rolled bar stock. All raw materials purchased are supplied with test reports in accordance with British Standards with full traceability. This is the first mandatory step in the flange production process to ensure good quality. The raw materials are retested in-house to ensure chemical composition, mechanical properties and metallographic analysis.
  • Cutting of raw materials – Correct and strict control of cutting sizes and proportions ensures full cost control.
  • Heating – This is a very important step for the quality of the flanges. It is necessary to keep detailed records of heating temperatures to avoid overheating. Overheating can damage the structure of the metal and the mechanical properties of the raw material.
  • Forging – The forging process is divided into free forging and die forging. The forging time and strength of flanges vary for different pressure classes.
  • Heat treatment-The purpose of heat treatment is to eliminate the stress inside the flange and make the density more uniform. Careful recording of heat treatment temperature and cooling time is the key.
  • Inspection of forging blanks – After the heat treatment process, select batch samples are tested again for chemical composition and mechanical properties to ensure that all items pass.
  • Machining of forging blanks – During machining, inspection is performed along with machining to ensure that each part of the flange is qualified. Machining is performed on CNC and/or lathes.
  • Finished Product Inspection – The finished product will be inspected 100% prior to delivery to ensure that the goods meet JIS, ASME, EN or customer standards.
  • Documented Documentation – The entire production process and quality checks at different levels are documented according to JIS compliant standard operating procedures. This is the guarantee of good quality.

  • Packaging: All forgings and flanges are packed in wooden boxes or crates or pallets to ensure safe movement of the goods.

Production process of JIS casting flange

The production process of a JIS casting flange typically involves several steps, including the creation of a mold or pattern, the casting of the flange using molten metal, and various finishing and quality control steps. To begin the process, a mold or pattern is created using a material such as wood or metal. This mold or pattern will be used to create the shape of the flange, and will typically be made to precise specifications to ensure that the final product meets the desired dimensions and specifications. Once the mold or pattern is ready, the casting process can begin. This typically involves melting the metal that will be used to create the flange, such as iron or steel, and pouring the molten metal into the mold or pattern. The metal is then allowed to cool and solidify, taking on the shape of the mold or pattern. After the casting process is complete, the flange will typically undergo various finishing and quality control steps. This may include machining or grinding to achieve the desired dimensions and surface finish, as well as testing to ensure that the flange meets the required specifications and standards. Overall, the production process for a JIS casting flange is a highly precise and technical process that requires a thorough understanding of metallurgy, casting techniques, and quality control processes.

Manufacturing process of JIS plate cutting flange

The process here is relatively simple, and the key raw material is hot rolled plate. The process is mainly used to produce lower thickness sliding plate flanges and blind flanges. All plates purchased are accompanied by a test certificate to JIS Standards. The circles are cut from the plates. No heat treatment is involved in the flange manufacturing process. Drilling and machining is carried out on the circles to obtain the required dimensions. The goods are visually inspected and marked in accordance with the relevant standards.

Marking of JIS Flanges

JIS flanges are typically marked with the JIS symbol, the flange size, the pressure rating, and the material specification. The marking may also include the manufacturer’s name or trademark. Here is an example of how a JIS flange might be marked:

JIS 10K 40A SUS316L

This marking indicates that the flange is a JIS flange with a pressure rating of 10K, a size of 40A, and is made of SS400 material. SS400 is a type of steel specification. It is important to correctly identify the marking on a JIS flange in order to ensure that it is suitable for the intended application and that it is compatible with other components in the piping system.

What are the differences between a flat face and raised face flanges?

  20230106232530 80823 - JIS Flanges

FF is a full face flange and RF is a flange with sealing surface steps. FF surface is generally used for flanges with low pressure, or the sealing surface needs to be pasted with stainless steel lining ring sealing surface to play the role of corrosion resistance. RF is raised face flange and can be used for PN1.6 – PN10MPA. The FF is flat, the sealing is not as good as RF, the pressure is 1.6 – 2.0MPA, and other forms such as RTJ and FM use higher pressure. The gasket of RF FF can be universal.

What is the difference between the sealing surface effect of FF flange and RF flange?

FF flange general pressure are relatively small, not more than PN1.6MPa, FF flange because the sealing contact area is too large, more than the effective sealing surface range of the part is too much, inevitably have bad contact sealing surface, so the sealing effect is not good; RF raised face surface flange sealing surface contact surface area is small, and the effective sealing surface range before the role, so the sealing effect is better than the full plane flange.

The difference between the raised face flange and male/female male face flange and use?

In flange connection, Male face flange shall be matched with Female Male face flange, commonly known as male and female, while raised face flange shall be matched with raised face flange. In general, raised face flange should also be a kind of flat flange, which is designated as RF, and RF face can only be linked with RF face. The code of Male face flange is M, and the M face flange needs to be connected with FM face. One is FM (Female Male), and the other is a pair of M (Male). The compression of M/FM surface is better than that of RF surface. Raised face flange and raised face flange are used together, and the code is RF. The comparison chart is as follows: 20230106234905 43654 - JIS Flanges

The angle between the sealing surface of raised face flange and the flange bolt connection surface is 45 °, and the angle between the sealing surface of Female Male face flange and Male flange and the flange bolt connection surface is 90 °, that is, the two sides are vertical. Raised face flanges are widely used in the market, and there is no problem when the pressure is below 2.5MPa. The price of Male/Female Male (MFM) face flanges is higher and the sealing effect is better, so the applicable pressure rating is relatively high. It is troublesome to design. For example, when the equipment condition diagram is provided, it is necessary to indicate what type of flange it is. Then, when the nozzle material is counted, it is another kind of matching flange.
