Types of SAE Flanges

SAE socket welding flanges
SAE socket welding flange is a common type of hydraulic connection. This type of connection requires the pipe to be inserted into the flange hole and welded. SAE butt weld flanges

SAE Blind Flange
SAE Blind Flanges are designed following the SAE J518 / ISO6162 standards. These are installed in hydraulic applications for the main purpose of blocking a passive pipe or nozzle in the system. SAE Blind Flanges are suited for high-pressure applications in the 3000 and 6000 series. These flanges are available in sizes ranging between 3/8 to 5 inches. Alternatively, they are known as Code 61 and Code 62 designed to work with 3000 PSI and 6000 PSI.
SAE Split Flange
Split Flanges are designed following the SAE J518 standards. Split flanges are identified as one of the most popular flange types and are mostly used due to their ability to withstand high pressure. Alternatively, split flanges are referred to as Code 61 Split Flanges and Code 62 Split Flanges. Split flanges are available in two major pressure series, 3000 PSI and 6000 PSI. The sizes of the split flanges range between 1/2 inch to 5 inches and 1/2 inch to 3 inches (based on the pressure level).
SAE 90D Flange
SAE 90D Flange is designed for high-pressure applications. The available pressure series for the SAE 90D Flange is 3000 PSI and 6000 PSI. SAE 90D Flanges are made following the ISO 6162 / SAE J518 standards. Flange fittings are connected to flanges to create a connection with more than one flange. There are several flange fittings and an SAE 90D flange is one of these. These flange fittings are available in a variety of sizes ranging between 3/8 inches to 5 inches.
SAE Adapter
Flange adapters are important parts used during the flange coupling process. They are important parts used in piping and hydraulic systems. It is a mechanical device that is to be connected to any flanged device. They are normally used for fluid control over the fluid flow. This means that a flange adapter can join with a flanged part to the bevel end of a tube or a pipe. A flange adapter can also be used in flange pipelines. Some of these pipelines include oil & gas, shipbuilding, or diving system application. But to fully understand what a flange adapter means, it is important to understand the meaning of flange and adapter.
SAE Flange PCD
The PCD of a flange is regarded as one of the most critical dimensions in valves and flow control. PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter. It is defined as the diameter of a circle that goes through each of the wheel bolts, studs, wheel rim holes or bolt holes. Flanges are regarded as the perfect example to describe and calculate the Pitch circle diameter. This is because a flange has multiple holes.
Standard for SAE flanges
There are several standards for SAE flanges, including SAE J518C, ISO 6162, and ISO 6164. These standards define the dimensions, materials, and performance requirements for SAE flanges, ensuring they are compatible and interchangeable across different manufacturers and systems.
SAE J518C
SAE J518C is North America’s most widely used standard for SAE flanges. It defines the dimensions, pressure ratings, and performance requirements for four-bolt split flange connections with O-ring seals. SAE J518C flanges are available in various sizes, from 1/2″ to 5″, and can withstand pressures up to 6,000 psi.
ISO 6162
ISO 6162 is the international SAE flanges standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It defines the dimensions, materials, and performance requirements for four-bolt split flange connections with flat face or O-ring seals. ISO 6162 flanges are available in sizes ranging from DN13 to DN127 and can withstand pressures up to 35 MPa.
ISO 6164
ISO 6164 is another international standard for SAE flanges developed by ISO. It defines the dimensions, materials, and performance requirements for four-bolt pad flange connections with flat face or O-ring seals. ISO 6164 flanges are available in sizes ranging from DN13 to DN127 and can withstand pressures up to 35 MPa.
How do SAE flanges work?
A complete set consists of a flat side flange and an O-ring side flange. The O-ring side flange contains a recessed seat for the rubber O-ring (usually made of NBR material). The complete kit forms a seal between the flat face and the O-ring, which is fixed in a circular recess in the other half. Tightening the bolt pulls the two halves together and compresses the O-ring.
The use of the O-ring gives O-ring flanges an advantage over metal-to-metal flanges, as all metal flanges are more prone to leakage because they must be tightened to a higher but narrower torque range. This makes metal-to-metal flanges more prone to striated threads or cracks.
A complete set of flanges is tightened to the recommended torque using socket head cap screws and spring washers. Bolt lengths are typically shorter than the overall length of the SAE flange, but this is normal according to SAE J518. In addition, SAE J518 does not require the use of hex nuts to secure flanges.
