What is a slip on flange?

The full name of the SO flange is the slip-on flange, installed by extending the steel pipe and fittings into the flange and fillet welding on both sides to fix the flange to the pipeline.

The inner bore of the slip-on flange is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the pipe to ensure that the end of the pipe or fitting can slide into the flange. Slip-on flanges are fillet welded with pipes or pipe fittings, which is different from the butt-welding method of butt-welding flanges. Pipes do not need to make beveled ends; only square ends can be welded. Usually, slip-on flanges can be fillet welded with both sides of the pipe to ensure the connection quality with the pipe.

Advantages of SO flanges

The SO flange saves space and weight and ensures a leak-free joint with good sealing performance. The size of the compact flange is reduced by reducing the sealing diameter, thus reducing the cross-section of the sealing surface.

Secondly, the SO flange replaces the flange gasket with a seal to ensure that the sealing surface matches the sealing surface so that the sealing surface can be compressed with only a small amount of pressure. As the required pressure decreases, the size and number of bolts are reduced accordingly, for which a new product with a small size and light weight is designed.

Types of Slip On Flanges

Slip-On Flanges are commonly used in piping systems to connect pipes or tubes. They are available in various types, such as Raised Face Slip-On Flanges, Flat Face Slip-On Flanges, Ring Type Joint Slip-On Flanges, Tongue and Groove Slip-On Flanges, and Male and Female Slip-On Flanges. The following are details of these different types of SO flanges.

  1. (RF) Raised Face Slip-On Flanges: Raised Face Slip-On Flanges are among the most commonly used flanges in the piping industry. They are used in low-pressure applications and are easily installed. These flanges are designed to fit over the pipe, with the flange face protruding from the pipe slightly. The raised face provides a surface for the gasket to rest against, creating a seal between the flange and the pipe.
  2. (FF) Flat Face Slip-On Flanges: Flat Face Slip-On Flanges are another common type of Slip-On Flange. They are used in applications where the piping system requires frequent dismantling. The flat face of the flange allows for easy alignment and assembly. These flanges are typically used in low-pressure applications.
  3. (RTJ) Ring Type Joint Slip-On Flanges: Ring Type Joint Slip-On Flanges are designed for high-pressure applications. They are used in applications where the pressure exceeds 900 PSI. These flanges are designed with a groove on the inside of the flange, where a metal ring is inserted. The ring is compressed when the flange is bolted to the pipe, creating a seal.
  4. (T&G) Tongue and Groove Slip-On Flanges: Tongue and Groove Slip-On Flanges are designed to prevent leaks in high-pressure applications. These flanges are designed with a tongue on one flange and a groove on the other. When the flanges are bolted together, the tongue fits into the groove, creating a seal.
  5. (M&F) Male and Female Slip-On Flanges: Male and Female Slip-On Flanges are commonly used in applications where the piping system requires alignment.
