Understanding your choice of forged ring gaskets options
When choosing a metal ring gasket solution, it is important to consider the specific requirements of the application, including factors such as pressure, temperature, and chemical environment. At the same time, it is also necessary to ensure that the selected solution conforms to relevant industry standards and regulations. It is best to consult professional engineers or professionals in related fields when selecting and applying metal ring gaskets.
What is a forged ring gasket?
The forged metal ring gasket is a solid metal gasket with an octagonal or elliptical cross-section shape processed by forging and heat treatment of metal materials, which has a radial self-tight sealing effect. Therefore, the metal ring gasket is sealed by the contact between the gasket and the inner and outer sides (mainly the outer side) of the flange trapezoidal groove, and the sealing is formed by pressing.
Classification of forged ring gasket
The metal ring gasket is divided into octagonal ring gasket and oval ring gasket. The metal ring gasket is divided into three structures: octagonal, lens ring gasket and elliptical according to the cross-sectional shape.
The commonly used R-type is divided into elliptical or octagonal according to the cross-section. The standard R-type annular gasket is manufactured according to API 6A and ASME B16.20 standard dimensions, and the maximum operating pressure is 10000 PSI. In the trapezoidal groove flange, the octagonal pad and the elliptical pad can be interchanged. The RX type is suitable for pressure-enhanced standard R-ring gaskets and is suitable for R-type flange groove sealing surfaces. The Model BX is suitable for pressure enhancement and is designed for applications of up to 15000PSI pressure systems. And we also have the adaptation of Style SRX and SBX. There are a variety of materials and forms suitable for different design and operation requirements; refer to the material characteristic table.

STYLE R: R type ring joint gaskets are available in oval or octagonal cross section and manufactured in accordance to API 6A and ASME B16.20 to suit API 6B and ASME/ANSI B16.5 flanges. The oval ring fits the round AND flat bottom ring groove flange while the octagonal shape fits only the modern flat bottom groove flange. Style R can be either oval or octagonal types and both types are interchangeable in modern flat-bottomed grooves. Especially, only oval types can be used in round-bottom grooves in old flange connections. Style R ring-joint gaskets are designed to seal pressure up to 6250 psi(425 bar) in accordance with ASME B16.5 ratings and up to 5000 psi(340 bar) in accordance with API 6A pressure ratings. |

STYLE RX: The RX type RTJ gasket is manufactured in accordance to API 6A and ASME B16.20 to suit API 6B and ASME/ANSI B16.5 flanges. The RX is a pressure energized version of the R octagonal gasket and fits the R type flat bottomed groove. The RX has an increased height and utilizes the internal system pressure to energize and improve the seal as internal pressure increase. Some RX sizes have a pressure relief hole to equalize pressure both sides of the sealing faces. Style RX has a non-symmetrical octagonal cross section. This non-symmetrical geometry provides an unbalanced contact with the flange groove resulting in an effective pressure-energized sealing which is also called “self-sealing”. RX ring-joint gaskets must be used in flat-bottomed grooves with a designed pressure up to approximate 10000 psi(700 bar). Since the style RX has a larger height than a style R, the make-up distance between two mating flanges are bigger. |

STYLE BX: The BX type RTJ gaskets are manufactured in accordance with API 6A and are suitable for use in high pressure API 6BX flanges. The gaskets form a metal to metal seal on assembly and the efficiency improves as internal pressure increases. All BX sizes have a pressure relief hole to equalize pressure across sealing faces. Style BX has a symmetrical octagonal cross section. In addition, it incorporates a pressure passage hole to balance the pressures each side of the sealing surfaces. Style BX ring-joint gaskets should also be only used with flat-bottomed grooves. Usually they are designed to suit API 6A Type 6BX flanges with a design pressure up to 20000 psi(1360 bar). The short height of style BX allows face-to-face contact of mating flanges. |

Dimensions of Forged Ring Gaskets
Forged ring gaskets are commonly used in various industrial applications, especially in the oil and gas, petrochemical, and chemical industries. The dimensions of forged ring gaskets can vary based on the specific requirements and standards of the application. However, I can provide you with some general information about the dimensions that are commonly encountered:
- Outer Diameter (OD): This is the measurement of the outer edge of the gasket. It corresponds to the size of the flange or mating surface where the gasket will be installed.
- Inner Diameter (ID): The inner diameter is the measurement of the inner edge of the gasket. It corresponds to the size of the bore or opening where the gasket will fit.
- Thickness (T): The thickness of the gasket is an essential dimension, as it determines the compression and sealing characteristics. The thickness can vary based on the material and the pressure requirements of the application.
These dimensions are critical for ensuring proper fit and sealing effectiveness. It’s important to note that forged ring gaskets are available in various materials, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and alloy steel, and the dimensions can be customized based on the specific requirements of the equipment or piping system.
When selecting forged ring gaskets, it’s crucial to consider factors such as material compatibility, temperature, pressure, and the type of fluid or gas being sealed. Additionally, adherence to industry standards, such as ASME B16.20 for metallic gaskets or ASME B16.47 for large-diameter steel flanges, can help ensure that the gaskets meet the necessary specifications for the intended application.

Precision is key in crafting gaskets that meet stringent specifications. The machining stage involves the removal of excess material, creating the intricate features necessary for optimal performance. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines ensure that each gasket is precisely machined, guaranteeing a perfect fit in the intended application.
- Final Inspection: Rigorous Quality Assurance
Before a metallic ring-joint gasket leaves the production line, it undergoes a final inspection that includes chemical analysis and mechanical testing. Chemical analysis ensures the composition meets specified standards, while mechanical testing assesses the gasket’s physical properties. This rigorous quality assurance process ensures that only flawless gaskets reach the market.
- Stamping and Packaging: Ready for Deployment
With quality confirmed, the gaskets move on to the stamping and packaging phase. Each gasket is stamped with essential information, including specifications and manufacturing details. Packaging is done with precision to safeguard the gaskets during transportation and storage, ensuring they reach end-users in pristine condition.
- Stock into Warehouse: Meeting Market Demand
The final step in the production process involves stocking the gaskets in the warehouse. Manufacturers maintain an organized inventory to meet market demand promptly. This strategic storage ensures that clients have access to the required gaskets when needed, supporting seamless operations across diverse industries.
The production of metallic ring-joint gaskets is a meticulous and highly specialized process. From the careful selection of raw materials to precision machining and rigorous quality assurance, each step contributes to the creation of a reliable and durable sealing solution.
